SIDON, PHOENICIA, AR 1/32 SHEKEL

SNG Cop 190variant, VF/EF, 8.6mm, .31 grams, Struck Circa. late 5th Century B.C.E.

Obverse: Galley, Phoenician letter above Reverse: Crowned Persian king running right, holding bow in outstretched left hand and spear in right

A coin that was sold as attributed to Samaria and indeed deceptively similar to Meshorer and Qedar #97. However this coin is really from Sidon, Phoenicia. Careful inspection reveals that the Samarian issues feature the king in a sitting-like and not a running pose. Furthermore the style compares favorably to the Phoenician. The king running stance for this coin is a combination of the Persian and Phoenician influences. We did find one example that appear to be the same sold by CNG in 2002 and listed as unpublished. You can see it here.

This coin was struck very forcefully on one side. Though wear is minimal it basically just affects the galley side. The king side is struck DEEP into the coin and while it was hard to photograph and get all the nuances the king is really bold almost PERFECT in hand!

In all a very interesting tiny coin in a hemiobol weight from the early Biblical city of Sidon.
