BAR KOCHBA AR ZUZ, YEAR TWO, "TRUMPETS - SH'MA TYPE"

Hendin 1392, Mildenberg 23, Very Fine+ toned, 17.6mm, 2.92 grams, Struck 133/134 C.E.

Obverse - Abbreviated name of Shimon within wreath of almonds, Reverse - Two upright trumpets, surrounded by inscription (year two of the freedom of Israel)

Nice dated Zuz with areas of flat strike as usual. Struck over a drachm of Trajan and the upper part of his portrait can be clearly seen. See additional photo.

This is the type where Shimon abbreviates his name with the first three letters 'Shin' 'Mem' ' Ayin' which is also the first word of "Shma" - Hear o' Israel. Some scholars conjecture that this was done intentionally to evoke patriotic feelings among the populace.
