ALEXANDER THE GREAT AR TETRADRACHM

Price 3202a, Muller 1338, EF, 26.6mm, 17.20 grams, Struck Circa. 330 - 320 B.C.E. Damascus Mint

Obverse: Head of Alexander as Herakles in lionskin headdress to right Reverse: Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle in right and scepter in left, forepart of ram in left field, delta 'A' in exergue.

A very attractive Tetradrachm from the SCARCE Damascus mint. Damascus mint had one minting period. Price calls these types 'lifetime' Tetradrachms, but curiously dates these to as late as 320 C.E. or a little "earlier". They are in lifetime style and were the product of a short decade long issue commencing about 330 C.E.

Ex: Schley collection, which was formed between the 1880's and 1920's. Acquired from Antiqua Inc. Coin has wonderful century old collection toning with subtle underlying hues of red and gold.
