Arguably the emperor who has had the greatest effect on history, Theodosius II is remembered today for his efforts to promote education & liberal arts. Called the calligrapher, Theodosius founded the University of Constantinople with 31 chairs, 15 in Latin & 16 in Greek, in 425 AD. Among the subjects were law, philosophy, medicine, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, music, & rhetoric. In 429, Theodosius appointed a commission to collect all the laws issued since the reign of Constantine I, & created a fully formalized system of law. This first commission never finished, but the second commission that met in Constantinople, assigned to collect all of the general legislations & bring them up to date was completed, & their collection was published as the Codex Theodosianus in 438. The law code of Theodosius II, summarizing edicts issued since Constantine, formed the basis for the law code of Emperor Justinian I in the following century. For the next 6 centuries, until the founding of western universities (Bologna, Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, & Salamanca being the first,) Constantinople was the undisputed center of learning for the Christian world.

St. Peter Chrysologus, 406-450, was bishop of Ravenna and was famous for his outstanding skill in preaching ( thus nicknamed Chrysologus, or "the golden-worded") for his charities and for his writings.
