The Ptolemies, inheritors of Alexander the Great' Egyptian Empire, struck some beautiful and larger coins called the Pentadrachm. They were the among some of the largest gold coins the world has yet seen,  and they showed the immense wealth of Egypt. The mint in Alexandria enjoyed the best engravers and the portraiture was beautiful and of the best quality. Ptolemy II coins added a regnal date between the eagle's legs.
