Juba II was king of the northern African territories of Numidia and Mauretania. His father, Juba I, was a sympathiser of Pompey the Great. In fact, at the death of his father, Juba II was paraded through the streets of Rome at Caesar’s request to celebrate his father’s demise. However, the tide turned with later generations as he befriended the future emperor Octavian. Octavian who had little desire to handle the backwater region of Numidia selected Juba II to oversee the population. Cleopatra Selene, the first wife of Juba II, was the daughter of Mark Antony and Cleopatra VII.
