Description: The Nabatean Kingdom was one of several small kingdoms that existed in what is now Syria, Jordan and the southern Arabian penninsula, bordering the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea (modern Yemen). Aretas was the king during the entire life of Jesus Christ. Aretas is mentioned twice in the New Testament; Paul wrote: "When I was in Damascus, the governor under king Aretas placed guards at the city gates to arrest me. But I was let down in a basket through an opening in the wall and escaped from him." (2 Cor. 11:32-33, see Acts 9:20-25)
