Egypt, 27th Dynasty to Ptolemaic Period, circa 525 - 332 BC
Faience ushabti measuring 4 1/4 inches tall with Hieroglyphs. Intact, some minor surface chipping and the glyphs somewhat worn but present. A nice example of good color.

In Egyptian belief, the ushabti was to represent laborers in the afterlife, thus sparing the deceased mindless labor and toil. In later dynasties ushabtis began to represent more of an agricultural role and are depicted holding hoes and seed sacks. The word shabti is the oldest form, changing to shawabti during the Second and Third Intermediate Periods. During the New Kingdom shebti was used, followed by the final form of ushabti in the Late Period. Shabti however, was used continuously during all periods.
