POSTUMUS AE orichalcum sestertius. Struck 260-261 AD. Laureate sestertius re-valued to a radiate double sestertius. IMP C POSTVMVS P F AVG, laureate, (and radiate!), draped & cuirassed bust right. Reverse - VIRTVS AVG, Emperor, or Mars, standing right, holding spear & shield, S C in fields. RIC 106. 31.5mm, 18.5g.

Several gouges have been hand-carved into this interesting example, a clumsy attempt to take a larger, earlier laureate sestertius of Postumus and double its value, by turning the laurel wreath into a radiate crown. This was done to larger laureate coins issued early in the reign of Postumus, to keep up with rampant inflation. The mints of Postumus would continue to issue smaller and smaller coins for both the sestertius and double sestertius (as well as declining standards for the antoninianus), leading to an interesting case where the larger coins were tacitly accepted as double sestertii based on their weight.

A most curious example of 'quantitative easing' and its effects, during a period of very high inflation.
