MARCUS AURELIUS AE sestertius. Struck at Rome, 173 AD. M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVII, laureate head right. Reverse - IMP VI COS III, RELIG AVG, Mercury standing left within tetrastyle temple with herms for columns, semicircular pediment containing a cock, ram, petasos, winged caduceus & purse. RCV 4996. Rare, valued at $450 in VF. 29mm, 22.6g.

According to David R Sear, the reverse on this coin is related to the "Miracle of the Thundering Legion", an event which took place in the territory of the Quadi during the course of Aurelius' Danunbian wars. At a moment of crisis in the midst of a battle the hard-pressed soldiers of Legio XII Fulminata were refreshed by the rain accompanying a violent storm, the thunder and lightning terrifying the barbarians and putting them to flight. This phenomenon was officially ascribed to the intervention of Mercury."
