Heavy AE coin (25 mm, 10.82 g)

Obverse: Lion standing left, right forepaw raised; Brahmi legend Sri Mananka around
Reverse: Goddess Lakshmi seated facing on lotus, raising her right hand; Brahmi legend Sri Bhogini to right
Ref: Rhodes, Gabrisch & Valdettaro, The Coinage of Nepal, A1; MNI 197

This is the earliest coin type of the Lichhavis.

The term mananka means 'the mark of Mana' and probably refers to King Mananka, who ruled c. 464-505 AD. Rhodes attributes this type to Sivadeva I, as it is closely related to the coins of Sri Amshuvarman, issued in c. 605-621.

Rare and CHOICE specimen, with a lovely depiction of Bhogini.
