Germany produced an extraordinary number of banknotes in odd materials such as leather, linen, silk, aluminum foil in their long slide into economic chaos in the early 1920s. Bielefeld, a textile town in Germany led the way in manufacturing some intricate and highly allegorical notes. This note is made linen.

I took a trip to Germany in July 2010 and in the course of my travels I went to Bielefeld. To my delight it was arranged for me to speak the bank historian of Stadtsparkasse Bielefeld. The gentleman was gracious enough to spend a few hours with me and his superb English more than made up for my miserable German. The fascinating part about talking to him was that he had so much more context for the time period, the people, etc. I had never realized that Paul Halka (?sp?) was the bank president at the time, and he latched onto the idea of printing currency on silk, linen and more. While there laws on the books at the time forbidding private minting of coinage, or printing of currency, it was first ignored around 1915, and then spread like wildfire once businesses / states realized there was no punishment for disobeying the law and a rather large upside. There were expiration dates for these notes that might have been publicized in newspapers, or over radio. That aside, Mr. Halka was also a German super patriot who took immeasurable offense at the handling of Germany by the Allies of WWI. He was intimately involved with the designs of the notes and you can discern what I would term a propaganda theme in many of the Bielefeld issues. Note that Mr. Halka nearly ran the bank into ruin when he deliberately issued currency after the central German government was making serious efforts to get the economic chaos under control. Neat note and interesting history

This particular note is 5000 Marks and has an insane amount of symbolism, propaganda, and facts about the times embedded.  Prices of goods are shown to reinforce the depths of desperation many Germans must have felt.
