Accompanied by his wife Julia Domna and sons Caracalla and Geta, Septimius Severus carried out his last military campaign against the Caledonians on Britain's northern frontier. Severus fell ill - with Caracalla then assuming sole command of the campaign - and died at the Roman headquarters in York in February AD 211. Following his death, Caracalla made peace with the Caledonians, which required the Romans to retreat behind the agreed-upon border of Hadrian's Wall.
