AE Chalkous 1.67g. 12mm. Paphos Mint
Large draped bust of Aphrodite Paphia r., wearing stephane.
Double cornucopiae, ends of diadem falling on r.
BASILEWS PTOLEMAIOU
CPE B727; Svoronos 1160 var.
Dark green patina.
Typical light porosity. A few tiny adhesions.
A later issue of the type with slightly irregular flan but large bust and wide cornucopiae.
This type was once attributed to Ptolemy IV when it was believed to portray Arsinoe III. Later scholarship determined that the coin may portray Cleopatra VII, but that assertion has now been refuted. The abundance of these coins found on Cyprus and the lack of similarity to Cleopatra's typical portraits have led Lorber to reattribute the female portrait to Aphrodite of Paphos.
