Mark Antony AR Legionary Denarius. 32-31 BC. ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian galley to the right / LEG XI, legionary eagle (aquila) between two standards. Cr544/25; Syd 1229. RSC 0039. No.3480. nVF. 3.5g.

This legion was recruited by Julius Caesar for the campaign against the Helvetians in 58 BCE. He mentions it in his account of the battle against the Nervians, which took place in 57. During the civil war agadinst Pompey, it took part in Caesar~s invasion of Italy.

It was named Claudia Pia Fidelis for its loyalty to Claudius when the governor of Dalmatia, Lucius Arruntius Camillus Scribonianus, revolted against the new emperor and Legion XI made an end to the rebellion.

It was still around to fight for Septimius Severus against Pescennius Niger.
