Gaius Caligula As. Struck 37-8 AD. C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT, bare head left / VESTA above, S C across field, Vesta seated left, holding patera and sceptre. Cohen 27. Ric 38.3 VF with nice portrait.

Caius born in 12 AD and succeeded Tiberius as emperor in 37 AD. He started as a well-loved and reasonable emperor, but after a fever nearly killed him, he apparently went insane, became quite depraved, and was assassinated in 41 AD. Caligula is actually a name that nobody would have called him to his face; it was a nickname meaning "Little Boots" that the legionaires gave him when he was a small boy in camp with his father Germanicus.
