Elagabalus AE30 of Serdica, Thrace. AVT K M AVP ANTWNINOC, laureate, horned, cuirassed bust right / OVLPIAC CEPDIKHC, Zeus standing left holding thunderbolt & scepter. serdica AE30 Moushmov 4950. No.1394. VF and the only Elagabalus coin of Serdica listed by Moushmov.

There is debate whether this coin is actually of Caracalla. Not only are the obverse inscriptions no use in distinquishing between Elagabalus and Caracalla (both had official names of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus), Elagabalus did his best to legitimize his reign by encouraging speculation that Caracalla was his father, so there is an intentional resemblance in the portrait styles.

We know that the mint of Serdica minted no coins of Macrinus, Severus Alexander, Gordian, or Philip, creating a large gap between Caracalla and Gallienus, in which this issue is - if indeed it~s Elagabalus - unique.
