STEFAN V (ISTVAN) AR OBOL BY JEWISH MINTMASTER

Very Fine+, chipped, 9.2mm, .14 gram

Obverse: Crowned king's head to left, MONETA UNGARIE around
Reverse: Two birds facing each other; "ALEPH" in center

A Very SCARCE coin for a short lived ruler. Coin is chipped, still SHARP with complete bust on obverse and nice Aleph on reverse!

The early kings of Hungary employed Jewish mintmasters until the late 13th Century. Although their identities remain unknown, their mintmarks which are assumed to be their initials remain on some of the coins they designed. An intriguing tiny historical silver coin!
