PEDIGREE
Recovered from: M.V. Aeolian Sky
A Greek freighter sunk after a collision off Dorset, England, in 1979. The Aeolian Sky held a consignment of 100 rupees (now recognized as 26b by PMG) stored in non-descript boxes in the ship’s medical bay.
After the sinking, the British government contracted salvage divers to enter the wreck and retrieve the notes, but the effort was unsuccessful. Reports state that while the bulk of the notes were never located, some fishermen in the area recovered a few notes from the Channel waters in the days after the sinking.
