England, Anglo-Saxon, series H type 48 sceattas dated ca. 710 - ca. 760 AD. Very Fine condition. Traditionally it was thought that the obverse motif on this coin type is a whorl comprising three wolves. More recent research, produced by Anna Gannon (2010), interprets this motif as a whorl of snakes / snakelike creatures. North 102; Gannon, A. (2010) “The Iconography of Early Anglo-Saxon Coinage”.
