Thomas Elder: Remarkable Collection of Greek Tetradrachms: Three Hundred Silver Coins of Alexander in the Collection of Thomas L. Elder, F. R. N. S., 32 East Twenty-Third St. New York City, six large sheets each depicting 100 obverses or reverses, 15½ x 17½ in, two with descriptive text, some minor staining at the blank margins not affecting the images. Generally Fine. Seldom offered. Elder notes on the first plate that the coins “were unearthed during the Spring of 1908 .. Total pieces found 18,000... the pieces shown were selected from 2,000 of the find recently imported to America.” Edward Newell, however, reporting on the source which was the Demanhur Hoard, dates the find to 1905 noting that in 1906-1907 Alexander tetradrachms were appearing for sale in Cairo at such a rate that the bottom fell out of the market, and coins could be had at near bullion levels. A Mr. Azeez Khayat of New York imported over 1,000 to the United States, a portion of that allotment forming the basis of the Elder plates. The set in the Krindler sale fetched $400.00
