zoom view

A beautiful and highly desirable lifetime issue Alexander the Great tetradrachm. Struck at the Amphipolis mint, during Alexander's lifetime, circa 325 - 323 BC.

The obverse with a refined, naturalistic portrait of the demigod Herakles. He is shown facing right, with the wild, unruly curls of his hair bursting out from under his headdress, made from the skin of the Nemean lion.

The reverse with Zeus, enthroned left, holding eagle in his outstretched right hand and resting on sceptre with his left. The legend reading:

"Of Alexander"

Herm in left field.

Alexander is reckoned to be one of the greatest military leaders in world history. He established an Empire the likes of which the world had never seen and shaped Western history forever. Coins such as this were first produced in his lifetime and were traded across his vast empire, from Gibraltar to the Punjab.

An especially beautiful example, boldly struck from dies of the finest style, with a handsome old cabinet tone.
