A superb example of an ancient Roman silver denarius minted under Emperor Septimius Severus, (Lucius Septimius Severus.) Struck 210 - 211 A.D. at the Rome mint.


The obverse with a superb portrait of Emperor Septimius Severus, he is shown facing right with long, thick beard and wearing laurel wreath. The legend reading:


SEVERVS PIVS AVG[vstvs] 


"Severus, Dutiful Augustus"


The reverse with the King of the gods, Jupiter standing left holding thunderbolt and scepter, two small children at his feet. The legend reading:


P[ontifex] M[aximvs] TR[ibunicia] P[otestat] XVIII CO[n]S[vl] III P[ater] P[atriae]


"Chief Priest, Eighteen times Tribune of the People, Three times Consul, Father of the Country" 



A truly excellent, beautifully centered example, displaying a magnificent portrait of Septimius and exhibiting atractive old cabinet toning. A lovely coin.
