An unusual ancient Islamic bronze lion, possibly Seljuk, dating to the 11th Century AD.


A well modelled piece, bursting with character, the lion standing foursquare with his long tail curled back on itself in a double loop. With anthropomorphic face, his ears, mouth and nose well defined. His thick mane extends down to his upper legs and across his back, raised and decorated with incised circles. His legs are short and pointed, his tail with a prominent fork at the back.


Height: 2 1/4 inches as mounted.


Length: 2 1/2 inches.

Ex. New York private collection, sold at Arteprimitivo in 2006 and according to the catalogue, 'acquired at Christie's London 12/90'.
