An ancient Byzantine silver milaresion coin of Emperor John I Tzimisces. Struck at the Constantinople mint, circa 969 - 976 AD.

The obverse with cross crosslet on globus and two steps, circular medallion at center containing crowned bust of John facing wearing loros, dividing the inscription I/W - A/n. The legend reading:

IHSUS XCRISTUS NICA

The reverse shows legend in five lines reading:

Professor Seaver taught ancient history at the University of Kansas and was a keen opera lover, hosting his own radio show on the subject for nearly 60 years.
