Rather worn but a very interesting and desirable reverse type that illustrates Commodus' obsession with Hercules. This coin was struck in 191 AD when Commodus was actively seeking divine protection against plots. Hercules was his champion He became so obsessed with Hercules that he soon believed that he was the reincarnation of Hercules.
Obv: Bust of Commodus right
Rev: Commodus as Hercules standing left holding a cornucopiae and sacrificing over a lighted altar. His club is leaning against the altar. To the left is a tree on which a lion skin hangs. "[HERC COMMODIANO PM TR P XVI IMP VIII C]OSVII[PP] S C"
