Bactria, Sophytos. (Circa 315-305 BCE). AE. An Extremely Rare Sophytos Bronze 12.5mm, 1.52gm, Bactria mint. Obv.: Bust of Athena to right wearing crested with plumes Corinthian helmet, (possibly torque around neck), dotted border around. Beveled border. Rev.: Anepigraphic. Owl standing right, head facing, three feathers tail, body feathers as dots, on an incuse circle. Zeno-340124(it's me there), Cf. Bopearachchi, Sophytes 4 (diobol). HGC 9, 211 (Antiochos I). SC 444 (Antiochos I). SCB p. 25, I (Antiochos I). SNG ANS 27 (diobol). Very fine to about extremely fine with beautiful redish patina. An extremely rare Sophytos bronze to have in your collection. According to the researcher, Filipe de Pina on Sophytos coinage: "The reverse is from an unpublished die". which makes this amazing piece of history even rarer. |
