Artuqids of Mardin. Nasir al-Din Artuq Arslan. AH 597-637, 1201-1239 AD. � Dirhem (30mm, 12.63 gm). Centaur-archer running left / Four-line legend. S/S 38.1. VF & SCARCE TYPE, dark brown patina with earthen highlights. A BEAUTIFUL AND PLEASING COIN.

 

Obv.: Centaur-arche running(to left or right), crowned head facing, human part of trunk turned three-fourths to the rear stretching a bow whose arrow is aimed at the wide-open jaws of a dragon emerging from the Centaur�s tail; legend in ornamental, transitional Kufic filling the spaces around the Centaur with the mintname and date in words; all within a solid circle. An annulet often appears near the margin between the Centaur�s head and raised elbow; sometimes there is a large dot in the field between the bow and Dragon�s head.

Rev.: Four-line legend in ornamental Kufic bearing the ism and laqab of the Caliph al-Nasir on the first and second lines; the laqab and ism of the new Ayyubid overlord al-�Adil Abu Bakr on the second and third lines, carried over to the top line of the margin; and the territorial title of the Artuqid ruler, Malik Diyarbakr, on the fourth line, continuing with his laqab, ism and nasab in the right, left and bottom margins; all within a solid circle.
