77FR8) MONGOLS OF PERSIA, HULAGU, 654-663 AH / 1256-1265 AD, AR DIRHAM, 2.87 GRAMS; STRUCK AT TABRIZ MINT, DOF, CITING THE KHAQAN ( GREAT KHAN ) HIS BROTHER MANGU OR MONGKE, AND HIS OWN NAME HULAQU; MITCHINER MWS-1551, DILLER 10, IN VF CONDITION. THIS IS THE SAME HULEGU WHO SACKED BAGHDAD, KILLED MOST OF THE MALE POPULATION AND PUT THE LAST ABBASID CALIPH TO DEATH.

In 1258, the Mongols forces of Hulegu, overran baghdad, seizing the caliph al-Musta'sim, whom they allegedly put to death by rolling him in a carpet and allowing elephants to trample him to death, so as to uphold the Mongol tradition of never spilling royal blood. The details of this story may be apocryphal.
