1334RF) Begteginid at Irbil, Muzaffar Al-Din Kokburi, 563-630 AH / 1168-1232 AD, AE dirham, Medium size module 26 mm, 8.37 grms, enthroned facing figure, Rev. within square : " Al-Malek Al-Naser Salah Al-Dunya Wal Din Yussuf " Album type 1888.1 rated RARE; Marsden's p.121 # 2., (According to Album, Marsden was apparently unaware of the Begteginids and attributed this piece to the Artuqid Yuluk Arslan) BMC vol III # 669-674.

The line of Beg-Tegin (or Begtegin) was founded by a Turcoman prince named Zayn A--Din 'Ali, who entered the service of the Zangids in 539 AH/ 1144 AD. However it was only during the reign of Muzaffar Al-Din Kukburi (586-630 AH / 1190-1232 AD) , who received the apanage of Irbil from Salah al-Din (Saladin) that the family excercised any real autonomy. Kukburi bequeathed his possessions to the Abbasid caliphate and Caliphal coins are known struck at Irbil after 630 AH.

One of the rare and unknown coins of the Islamic Iconography series that you are not likely to see any time soon; This is one out of 4 specimen of this type I acquired from the Henry Chitwood collection.
