zoom view
C. Poblicius Malleolus AR Denarius. Rome, 96 BC. Helmeted head of Mars right; mallet (malleolus) above, mark of value below chin. Reverse - Warrior standing left before trophy, right foot on cuirass, holding spear; C•MAL and caduceus above prow behind. Crawford 335/3c; RSC Poblicia 6. Scarcer variety with prow instead of tabella in right field. 18mm, 3.9g. A decent example, nicely toned.

One of the many examples on Republican coinage where literal puns are made on the moneyer's name - a 'malleolus' (IE mallet) appears above Mars' head. Likely associated with the victories of Gaius Marius
