The Maukharis were vassals of the Guptas who established themselves at Kanauj during the period of Gupta decline in the sixth century. They ruled there until they were supplanted by Harshavardhana.
Maukhari coins follow the madhyadesa type of the Guptas, with the fan-tailed peacock reverse and the same legend terminology. However, the style of the head on the obverse is quite different. Note the "Indian" style of eye. The coins are VERY RARE and this is a CHOICE specimen. |
