Gaul, Nemausus AR obol, ca. 40 BC, .39gm, 10.8mm.  Obv: Helmeted male (Mars?) bust right.  Rev: NEM COL in wreath.  SNG Copenhagen 691; RPC I 519.  EF, well-centered on a broad flan for type.

This is the only known silver issue of the Roman colony of Nemausus.  This rare issue, plus two concurrently issued small bronze types with a similar obverse design, constitute the earliest physical evidence of the beginning of Nemausus as a Roman colony.  The city started as a Celtic settlement, named after the Celtic god Nemausus.
