Newfoundland was the only British colony in North America to strike gold coins for general circulation. This book explores the history of Newfoundland through its coinage. This was remarkable given that it was one of the poorest British possessions in North America and with an economy largely based on the barter system. This book explores the history of Newfoundland through its coinage. It presents fascinating new details for each year that gold coins were minted, the existing distribution of these scarce coins, a survey of the greatest collections ever assembled, and the provenances of the rarest of the gold coins.

Harvey B. Richer is a professor and the associate head in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of British Columbia. His coin collecting interests date back to a very early age when he and his brother collected coins from circulation in the Montreal area. In 2013 he made his first trip to Newfoundland, where, with his son, he mainly explored the western part of the island. They climbed Gros Morne, hiked the Tablelands and in St. John’s he made his first visit to the Provincial Archives at The Rooms as well as to Memorial University. From this trip he returned with numerous documents that formed the seed of a book on the gold coins of Newfoundland. He returned the following summer for an extensive visit, inspecting the Rooms’ coin collection and spending considerable time with a historian at Memorial.
