Reverse Stylized letter sa, for samvat (year), flanked by goad and battle axe, Anka date 23 below

Comments These coins were unobtainable until a small hoard emerged recently. They are still rare. The distinguishing features of the "Series 3" coins attributed to Bhanudeva III are that there is only one dot above the circle in front of the bull, and the letter sa on the reverse is more elongated than before and closed on the bottom.

The Eastern Gangas were the dynasty who built the famous Sun Temple at Konarak. Their coins are the first non-Islamic coins in India to use the decimal, or place-number, system to write the dates.
