POPPAEA SABINA AND CLAUDIA, CAESAREA PANEAS

RPC 4846, Hendin 578, Near VF on a nice large flan, circa 63 - 68 C.E., 20.5mm, 6.12 grams.

Minted in Caesarea Paneas

This RARE coin is the only coin ever issued in the name of Claudia, Nero's daughter, who died in infancy 63 C.E. Poppaea is described as a "god fearer" by Josephus. In fact she interceded with Nero several times on behalf of the Judaeans. It is logical that Agrippa a Jewish king would want to show her honor.
