JEWISH WAR FIRST REVOLT AGAINST ROME AR SHEKEL, YR. 3 - 68/69 C.E.

Hendin 1361, Near Extremely Fine / Fine, 23.2mm, 12.70 grams, Jerusalem Mint

Obverse: Chalice surrounded by Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Shekel of Israel", abbreviated "Year 3" above chalice

Reverse: Staff of three pomegranates, surrounded by Paleo-Hebrew inscription "Jerusalem the Holy"

Nicely centered with all letters of the inscription present. The obverse is quite bold and sharp, though the reverse suffers from some erosion. Minor areas of crystallization are apparent, however the coin is stable. In all an opportunity to own this important historical coin at a favorable price.

Shekels of year three are far scarcer than those of year two. The "Shekel of Israel" was struck from 66 - 70 C.E. during the great revolt against Rome which culminated in the destruction of the Temple.
