BAR KOCHBA ZUZ, YEAR 3

About EF, 18.7mm, 3.10 gram. Minted 134/135 C.E.

This coin is EF and has the characteristic softness of strike on some coin areas. This phenomena is regular to all genuine Bar Kochba silver and is a result of all of Bar Kochba's coins being overstruck on other (primarily Roman as an act of rebellion) coins.

This coin exhibits a very rare clashed die. This happens when the dies are struck together without a coin in between. Part of the form of one die is therefore imprinted on the other. Thus the 'lamed' and 'het' of the die reverse can be seen engraved on the obverse to the upper right of the cluster of grapes. Quite an unusual piece.
