PHILISTIAN - GAZA AR DRACHM WITH ASHKELON "ALEPH" COUNTERMARK

 

14.2mm, 3.95 grams, Struck Circa. 5th - 4th Centuries B.C.E.

 

Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena to right, countermark "Aleph" (of Ashkelon) in center

Reverse: Owl to right, olive spray and crescent left, AOE downward in right field

 

Both Ashkelon and Gaza were important maritime port cities. Exceptionally RARE - This is the FIRST coin of the type we have seen or handled!
