ANTIOCHUS VII EURGETES "HELMET" AE, ASHKELON

Hendin 1120, SNG Spaer 2095, VF, 12.6mm, 1.48 grams, Ascalon Mint

Obverse: Crested helmet with cheek pieces to right, border of dots

Reverse: King Antiochos, to sides of aphlaston, round eagle standing left on prow of galley, palm branch behind right shoulder to left, club in left field

A nice example of this scarce and interesting type, with a finally engraved helmet! This coin was the obvious prototype for the extremely rare coin (Hendin 1136) struck by John Hyrcanus as client ruler of Antiochos VII.

Sometimes auctions can be quite suprising, see here ($750 after fees.)
