SF10 - Aquitaine, Bergerac, Henry of Grosmont, as Earl of Lancaster and Lord of Bergerac (1347-1361), Coinage as ‘COMES’ (Earl – 1347-51), Billon Double à la couronne, 1.52g., 23mm, Bergerac mint (Dordogne), LAN COME across field, legend around, rev., cross calvary, (WF.310; E.132 bis.; S.8112), extremely rare (R3), weak in parts otherwise almost very fine for issue. $4750Ex Steve Ford Collection.
A very reasonable specimen of an extremely rare coinage that is often poorly struck on bad metal. Only 4 other specimens are believed to have been sold publically since 1990.
This is an imitation of Withers Ford 109 which is itself an imitation of the double parisis of Philippe VI (Duplessy 270) issued 12 April 1350. The coin must have been struck at some time between 12 April 1350 and 6 March 1351 when Henry was elevated to Duke of Lancaster.
