THE REBIRTH OF ROME UNDER THE FLAVIANS.

This coin refers back and gives reference to the early, stable days of the Republic of Rome. After the civil war of 69 AD. with Galba, Otho, and Vitellius succeeding one after the other on the throne, Vespasian and his sons, Titus and Domitian, gave stability to the Roman world and their rule became the Flavian dynasty. The she-wolf and twins is indicative of the legendary foundation of Rome and the stability, order, and power which followed. Roma with the shield, helmet, and spear exemplifies the might of the Roman state which the Flavians succeeded in re-establishing.

Titus Captured Jerusalem and was awarded a triumph and the Arch of Titus in Rome still stands commemorating his victory. He was a good military commander. He also completed the Colosseum. He helped to relieve the suffering of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 and the fire in Rome in 80. He was only an emperor for barely two years.
Although the Jews were no longer a nation, in the usual sense of a territorial group, they still continued to feel united. That is one of the outstanding marvels in all human history. The reason for this most unusual situation is that the Jewish idea, Judaism, was made more important than the Jewish land and national life.
