Justinian II was the last Byzantine emperor of the Heraclian Dynasty. Rhinotmetos was his nick-name due to his slit-nose. The coins of his first reign, 685-695 AD, were the first coins ever to bear the portrait of Christ. Christ's hair and beard were shown long and shabby and somewhat not well groomed. After a decade in exile and during his second reign, 705-711 AD, Justinian minted coins in which Christ's hair and beard are closely trimmed giving him a rather sophisticated/urbane and youthful guise. I was told that the "Shroud of Turin" image was used by the celator to cut the dies used to strike the coins creating the image of Christ during Justinian II first reign.

St. John Damascene, 675-749, was a priest, religious, & doctor of the Church. He lived during and through Justinian II first and second reigns. Born in Damascus, he served for a time as finance minister to the caliph before his ordination in 726. He then dedicated himself to study and writing, producing both works of dogmatic theology as well as many hymns. One of the principal defenders of the use of images in religious worship, he is considered the last Eastern Father of the Church.
