314CRG3) GHAZNAVID, Mahmud Ibn Sebuktegin, 388-421AH/ 998-1030 AD, AR MULTIPLE DIRHAM. SWORD TYPE. Weight 11.28 grms, diameter a spectacular 50 MM and grades good VF for the type. On this coin Mahmud is cited with the title Yamin Al Dawla Wa Amin Al-Millah in addition to Mahmud in the lower reverse, and finally on the obverse the Abbassid Al-Qader Bellah is cited as spiritual authority. The lower obverse field depicts a sword, one of very few exceptions where an OBJECT (a sword) is depicted on an Islamic coin. It was minted in ANDARABAH in the year 389 AH .. Andaraba was the main mint in the Tokharestan region in present day Afghanistan, and was surrounded by rich silver mines. This is Michael Mitchiner type AN16, The multiple dihems of Medieval Afghanistan (the best reference for these coins).
