Territorial gold issues were struck by various private individuals, assayers, bankers etc outside the United Sates Mint and were not receivable at face value for government payments. They circulated widely in commerce due to a shortage of regular coinage.
San Francisco-based firm of Wass, Molitor & Co. was owned by two Hungarian exiles who initially founded the firm as a gold smelting and assaying plant. They issued territorial gold denominations of $50, $20, $20, $10 and $5 in response to a plea from the commercial community for small gold coins.
