Charles I (1625-49), silver Shilling, Tower Mint, Group D, bust 5, larger fourth crowned bust left just breaking inner circle at top, double arched crown with beaded arches, value XII in field behind, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, initial mark portcullis (1633-34) both sides, .CAROLVS D; G; MA; BR; FR; ET. HI; REX., rev. quartered shield of arms in frame, C to left, R to right, only stops in legend either side of initial mark, .CHRISTO AVSPICE REGNO., weight 6.00g (Sharp D5/1; Brooker 484/482; N.2223; S.2789). Toned, some striking weakness in parts, otherwise almost very fine and a rare bust.
 
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland"; and on the reverse "I reign under the auspice of Christ."
