This Taler was produced in 1548 which was a turbulent time in the history of Germany and the religious freedom. The Schmalkaldic War of 1546-7 had just ended with the defeat of the Protestants. The Augsburg Interim went into effect in 1548 which halted any further changes to Christianity until the “decision of the general council”. While Lutheranism had technically lost its battle in Germany, it opened the door for religious discussion.

Franconia was located in northern Bavaria. The Ansbach family rule began with Friedrich VI of Hohenzollern, burgrave of Nuremberg, who because elector Friedrich I of Brandenburg (1415-1440). The Ansbach family died out in 1603.
