Modern day Soli is located in southern Turkey. This coin was struck before Alexander III, the Great came and conquered the area. Prior to his reign, Cilcia was overseen by satraps put in place by the Persians, specifically the Achaemenid Dynasty. Soloi was considered a vassal state and the male population assisted in any battles that their overlords required. Once Alexander conquered the area in 333 BC he fined the residents for their previous allegiance to the Persians and then imposed a democratic constitution. He even held honorary games in the city.
