zoom view
Septimius Severus. Lydia, Attaleia Mint 193-211 AD. Obverse: AVTKAL CEOVHROC Laurate head right. Reverse: ATTALEATWN Selene (=Luna) running right with two torches, crescent on shoulders. BMC: 20 Very Rare. Size: 24mm, 5.80g. Professional Numismatic Notes: A very rare and interesting type! Selene is the very seldom seen Greek equivalent of the Roman deity Luna. She is the goddess of the moon (hence the crescent on her shoulders) and is associated with Sol (Helios), the sun deity. Minor flan flaw done at minting, but it doesn't affect any of the detail.
