Legio XIII Gemina was formed in 57 BC by Julius Caesar in his war against the Belgae. It served under him against the Nervians and was the legion with which he crossed the Rubicon on 10 January 49 BC to invade Italy. It was disbanded in 48 BC after the victory over Pompey Magnus at Pharselus, but then recalled in 46 and 45 BC for the Battles of Thapsus and Munda respectively, then disbanded again. It was reformed in 41 BC by Octavian for the conflict against Sextus Pompeius and served under Octavian in the civil war against Marc Antony.
